Race & Event Details
UCI’s debut at Mt Van Hoevenberg is one of 15 weekends of racing in a global series that spans 10 countries and tests pro riders across a wide range of courses and climates as they look to accumulate points toward an overall championship.
As the only mountain bike racing format in the Olympic Games, the Cross-Country Olympic discipline at Mt Van Hoevenberg will see many riders just coming off the 2024 Paris Summer Games. The race’s mass start will send a pack of the world’s best riders going hard and fighting for position on a track that will put their amazing abilities to the test. A set number of laps with strikingly steep climbs made to induce pain followed quickly by downhill stretches that will test the full range of bike handling skills.
Put a pack of the world’s most highly motivated, highly skilled racers on a condensed track over a shorter distance, and watch excitement shoot sky high. Cross-Country Short Track races are scheduled at the start of a race weekend, and the results decide the start order for the Cross-Country Olympic races to come. It’s extremely fast-paced with loads of action!
Cross-Country Marathon sees racers compete on grueling 100km courses. Not only is a racer’s endurance tested, but also their ability to adapt to different terrain, as well as being able to play the mind games of racing in a fast-moving pack. Are you ready to see how grueling this sport can get?
Spectators will be able to roam the venue from the Expo to the World Teams Paddock, to multiple spectator locations along the course as designated by the course map. Easily accessible viewing is located in the stadium (also including flat smooth surfaces for spectator viewing near Start/Finish), and is accessible from the Expo area or the Mountain Pass Lodge. Those up for a hike are encouraged to explore the course featuring large spectator areas above the Stadium and at the Reservoir. Please look for signage and adhere to special crossing locations and course crossing marshals who will guide you when the time is best to cross. (Please Note: There is no seating provided in the General Admission spectator viewing areas for this event, however you may BYOC — Bring Your Own Chair).
• ATHLETES TO WATCH | This list of World Cup athletes are just some of those likely to be at the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series in Lake Placid. The field will be considerably larger, and injury or other circumstances could prevent some riders from racing. The start list will be firmed up prior to the start of the races. It’s sure to be an exciting weekend of racing as these riders and many others descend on the historic Mt Van Hoevenberg for our inaugural UCI Mountain Bike World Cup races.
WOMEN:
Alessandra Keller (Switzerland) | This 28 year old rider made her Olympic debut at the Paris Games, placing 7th. A four-time Swiss XCO champion, she won silver at the 2022 short track world championships in Les Gets, France behind this year’s Olympic Gold medalist, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot.
Haley Batten (USA) | With Olympic experience under her belt in Tokyo in 2020, the 25-year-old Batten powered through the race in Paris this year to win silver, the best finish ever by a Team USA mountain bike athlete. She also laid down her first UCI XCO World Cup win in April in Brazil and hasn’t finished outside the top ten in any race she’s entered this season.
Savilia Blunk (USA) | This two-time national cross-country champion also won the cross-country short track title in 2023. At 25 this season, she snagged her first podium at a UCI World Cup event, sharing the podium with her teammate, Haley Batten in Brazil. True to Olympic values, winning is only one of Blunk’s priorities. She’s also a passionate supporter of young riders and seeks always to inspire others to embrace cycling as a lifelong sport and to feel empowered.
Evie Richards (Great Britain) | She’s a star of cross country mountain biking and cyclo-cross racing alike. And, she’s Great Britain’s first elite MTB XCO World Champion. She began making her marks on international mtb cross country racing at just 18 years old, and in 2021, came away with the top position at the UCI MTB XCO World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy. Today, at age 27, the elite racers around the world have to fight her for victory at every race.
Jenny Rissveds (Sweden) | The 30-year-old Rissveds, who took the bronze medal at the Paris Games, is no stranger to Olympic mountain biking competition. She won the gold medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, too. On the UCI MTB World Cup circuit, she’s won or been on the podium numerous times beginning with a first place finish in 2019 in the XCO race in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Her most recent victory in UCI MTB racing was first in the XCO race in Mairipora, Brazil.
Sina Frei (Switzerland) | The silver medal winner at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Frei joined her Swiss teammates Jolanda Neff and Linda Indergand on the podium in the first ever Swiss sweep of an Olympic event since 1936. It was also the first time any nation won all three medals in an Olympic cycling event since 1904. Currently 27 years old, Frei’s most recent podium was at last year’s UCI XCC World Cup in Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic.
MEN:
Tom Pidcock (Great Britain) | A regular in the Tour de France road race, Pidcock is also among the most well-known and well-respected pro cyclists in UCI mountain biking. In winning gold at Paris, he overcame not only a tire puncture during the men’s cross country race but also overcame a case of COVID that forced him to abandon the Tour de France just two weeks earlier. Having also won the event in Tokyo in 2020, his remarkable Paris comeback made him the first back-to-back gold medalist in mountain biking since 2008.
Nino Schurter (Switzerland) | At 38 years old, Shurter is a 10-time cross-country world champion who has been around both the UCI circuit and the Olympics for some time. The first man to hold nine World Cup titles, he’s also taken home gold, silver, and bronze Olympic medals at the 2016, 2012, and 2008 Games respectively. In total, he’s tallied 36 individual wins in World Cup competition.
Alan Hatherly (South Africa) | The bronze medalist in Paris 2024, Hatherly is a 28 year old who placed 26th at the 2016 Games in Rio and 8th place at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. His rise in recent years included two first place finishes and two second place finishes in World Cup competition in 2023. This season so far, in addition to his Olympic medal, Hatherly has netted five podium World Cup finishes, including two golds.
Victor Koretzky (France) | This three-time Olympian stepped onto the podium in his home country as the 2024 Paris Games’ silver medalist in men’s mountain biking. That was after finishing 10th at the 2016 Rio Games and fifth at the 2020 Tokyo Games. A three-time men’s relay world champion, Koretzky’s individual achievements in recent years include the XCO bronze medal in the 2021 world championships and silver in XCC competition at the 2024 world championships.
Christopher Blevins (USA) | A two-time Olympian, Blevins (26 years old) finished 13th in this summer’s Paris Games and 14th in Tokyo in 2020. Both a road cyclist and mountain biker, Blevins chose to focus on the latter in the lead up to the 2020 Olympics. Since that decision, he’s met with considerable success, rising to first place in XCC competition at the 2021 UCI World Championships and first in XCO World Cup competition that same year in Snowshoe, West Virginia. He was also first in the 2022 XCC World Cup in Snowshoe and first in this 2024 season in XCO World Cup competition in Mairipora, Brazil. That in addition to numerous podium finishes in World Cup races in the last several years.
Riley Amos (USA) | Though Amos finished just seventh at the 2024 Paris Games, he’s otherwise been showing the world something truly special this season. At just 22 years old, he’s blowing the field away at UCI mountain biking events, finishing first in all the XCO World Cups so far and first in four out of five XCC World Cups. Besides the outright wins, he’s got just one XCC second place finish so far this year.
Simon Andreassen (Denmark) | With consistent showings on XCO events, Andreassen was considered a big talent in mountain biking even before he made history at the 2016 Rio Games as the youngest rider ever to compete at the Olympics. After his first World Cup win in 2020 at Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic, health issues impeded his further progress until this year when he placed first in Araxa Brazil’s XCO race and third at Les Gets in France. After his 12th place finish at the 2024 Paris Games, the cycling world is anticipating there’s more to come.
